Students from Nungurner Primary School and Swan Reach Primary School – team NASR – won the regional First Lego League Challenge held at Gippsland Grammar’s Bairnsdale campus on Wednesday, November 6.
The event was a fantastic opportunity for students from across the region to come together and celebrate their fantastic coding and engineering skills.
This year’s local event was coordinated by the enthusiastic Sharen Cameron from Gippsland Grammar’s Bairnsdale campus.
Nungurner and Swan Reach schools hope the competition will be able to grow and encourage other local schools to sign up in future years.
First Lego League Challenge is designed for students between the ages of 9 and 16. This year Nungurner Primary School and Swan Reach Primary School collaborated to send their first team of students to the Lego First event.
The NASR team worked like engineers on a joint project for several weeks, planning, constructing and programming an autonomous robot. They worked under the guidance of Mr Jorgensen (Swan Reach Primary) who facilitated the student’s learning by asking many prompting questions, rather than just showing the students what to do.
Team NASR gave up numerous lunch times and even met after school to collaborate on their design and coding.
In addition to the design and coding of their robot students also researched a topic of their own choosing, considering how technology could be used to solve a problem.
Team NASR presented their idea to a panel of judges. They developed an idea to assist the monitoring of the Burrunan Dolphin.
Team NASR progressed to the next round on December 1 held at Maquraie University in Sydney. The boys did an amazing job representing East Gippsland and competing with teams from across Australia.
They had a phenomenal experience that will be remembered for a long time.
