There was an attendance of 55 members and visitors at the October Lakes Entrance Garden Club meeting and the club is pleased to see an increase in visitors to the meetings each month.
Show bench judge for October was Susie Swann and she enjoyed choosing her favourites in each section.
October’s special sections were for spring flowers and iris.
The arrangement depicting spring saw first place taken by Truus Adams. Her entry was in colours of yellow, orange and green. Second was Dale Bishop in colours of red, purple and white. And there was a Halloween pumpkin too.
Spring is iris time and the iris section was split into two. Section “A” for one stem bearded iris was won by Faye Rowe with a bloom with mauve falls and white standards – This was best exhibit for the day.
Equal second went to Dearne Albert with a dark burgundy bloom and Joy Davenport with a bloom of white with stitched purple edges.
Section “B” for a container of mixed iris was also won by Faye Rowe and her vase was a real wow filled with iris’ of many colours. Second was Dearne Albert. Susie said that these sections were her favourites.
In colours of the rainbow “A” section first was a purple umbel bloom from Diane McStay. Second was a pink rose from Dale Bishop. “B” section was full of roses, but first went to a orange poppy from Sheryl MacCubbin and second to a lemon grevillea ‘moonlight’ from Diane McStay. “C” section – pretty in white – saw first place go to Gwen Christopher with a cute double daisy and second was Sheryl MacCubbin with a big white poppy. “D” section provided lots of variety, with first a beautiful red rose with orange under the petals called ‘Cleopatra’ from Dearne Albert. Second was a white stitched with purple bearded iris from Janice Kelly.
Dearne Albert was first in the fruit section with some lovely lemons. In the vegetable above ground section first was Sheryl MacCubbin with a butternut pumpkin – last season’s and it has kept well. Equal second went to to Dearne Albert and Joy Davenport – both with plates of fresh peas.
In the vegetable below ground section first went to Joy Davenport with lovely red radishes and second to Dearne Albert with nice young carrots.
There were only three entries in the photography section but what pretty ones they were. First went to Janice Kelly with an amazing mauve wisteria covered with flowers. Equal seconds went to Sheryl MacCubbin with a kookaburra perched on a fence patiently waiting for a lizard, and Dearne Albert with a little leprechaun made in felt by Jenny Romano – this was from the exhibition at Orbost that was part of the June outing this year.
It was Melbourne Cup theme for the floral art section this month. The two entries were big, bright and full of colour. First went to Truus Adams and second to Shirley Bardwell.
Guest speakers were local musicians Moore Fiddling Around – Don and Kay – who made it a bit different this month with music instead of an actual speech.
They have played together for the past 10 years with their own style, blending instruments with vocals covering genres such as light classical, Irish, bluegrass, swing, 60s and 70s and country.
Don and Kay perform regularly at venues in Gippsland and also tour. Kay plays fiddle and mandolin and Don plays guitar. Kay harmonises to Don’s melodic vocals.
They had members up and dancing and the others singing along and tapping their feet.
The next Lakes Entrance Garden Club meeting is Monday, November 18, at 1.30pm at the Mechanics Hall. Visitors are always welcome.
