GIPPSLAND COMMUNITY FOUNDATION will hold its annual general meeting next Monday from 3pm at the Centre for Combined Health (5 Radford Place, Bairnsdale). The meeting will see the sharing of projects achieved by community, featuring a review of the 2023/24 period. The new first signature project, Youth on Purpose, will also be unveiled. A series of engaging youth workshops that encourage community leadership and personal confidence, brilliantly facilitated by Chico Johnson. They will also be unveiling the result of our independent evaluation on the impact, effectiveness and community response to Gippsland Community Foundation activities. Gippsland Community Foundation are deeply proud of our ongoing involvement in community strengthening activities across Gippsland.
BAIRNSDALE SQUASH and Racquetball will host the 2024 Gippsland Lakes Classic from this Friday to Sunday.
VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN the lifeblood of St John Ambulance Victoria since 1883. For more than 100 years, volunteers have been saving lives and delivering care and compassion to those in sickness, suffering and distress throughout Victoria. The organisation is currently looking for community-minded individuals who want to support to their community at local events, festivals and in emergencies. The Bairnsdale team is based in the local community and assists at a wide range of events and emergencies each year. If you are keen to volunteer in Bairnsdale, Sale or Wellington Shire, an online session will be held on Monday from 6.30pm
NOMINATIONS ARE NOW open for the East Gippsland Shire Council Australia Day Awards which focus on individuals and events that have made a significant contribution to the region. If you know someone who has contributed to the community and deserves to be recognised, why not nominate them for an East Gippsland Australia Day Award. These shire-wide awards recognise people who have dedicated their time to making a difference in their community. Nominations are open now in the following categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year. Nominations for the Australia Day Awards close on Friday, December 6.
BAIRNSDALE FOUR-WHEEL Drive Club is excited to hold its first exhibition of four-wheel drive vehicles at the Bunnings car park in Bairnsdale on Friday, November 22, from 5pm. Owners are welcome to attend with their vehicles to show them off. Club members will be available to share their knowledge and experience and answer questions about their cars and club membership. A free sausage sizzle will be provided on the night.

COLOUR AND CREATIVITY workshops will be held at the Benambra Neighbourhood House on November 12 and December 10, with attendees given the opportunity to connect with their creative side, using acrylic paint on stretchered canvas and coloured ink on paper. Art is a fun and therapeutic activity great for calming the mind and body, developing self-awareness and cultivating mental wellbeing.

THE BAIRNSDALE COUNTRY Music Club combined with the Bombala Country Music Association will hold a “country music at its best afternoon” at the Cann River Hotel this Sunday between 11am to 3.30pm. The event will feature the Back Road Boys Band, Ron Milliner, Michelle Russell, Danny Bowden, Graham Hampshire, Steve Mills, Barbara Saunders, Ronni Hofen, Lindsay and Gail Hammond.
THE NEXT COMMUNITY market at the Cann River Hall on November 16 requires some stall holders. The event will also feature a car show and lawn mower racing.

OCTOBER SCHOOL AWARDS at Heyfield Primary School were given to Freya Berry, Indianna Parrish and Ayden Leask for being responsible representatives of the school. All are positive team members who include, encourage and listen to others. They show pride in their work and themselves, through excellent behaviour and by always trying your best.

A FREE BUS tour will take place next week to celebrate National Recycling Week. The tour on Wednesday, November 13 will encompass the Kilmany Landfill and Waste Transfer Station. You will meet the waste and sustainability team, see how materials are collected, sorted and integrated into the circular economy and pick up practical tips to become an expert at getting it sorted. The bus departs 9.30am from the Port of Sale and returns at 11.30am.

THE ANNUAL LOCH Sport Golf Club tournament will be played on the weekend of November 23-24. Saturday will feature a women’s stableford and men’s stroke events, while Sunday will see Canadian stroke played.
AN ANTI THEFT number plate day was held last Saturday at the Loch Sport CFA with car owners given the opportunity to instal anti-theft screws on their plates. Offenders use stolen numbers to avoid identification when committing serious offences like petrol theft, drug trafficking and burglary.

GIPPSLAND VEHICLE COLLECTION is celebrating its 20th birthday this Sunday with a great family day between 9.30am and 1pm.
WITH THE fire season approaching the Maffra Fire Brigade is seeking juniors aged between 11-16 for the running season. This is the competition side of the brigade but is also a lot of fun. The kids will get to learn new skills that can later be converted into firefighting skills, if they wish to volunteer. It’s a good opportunity to meet new friends from around Victoria at local competitions, while also keeping fit. Trainings are free and now run on Mondays and Thursdays from 4-5.30pm.
MAFFRA GOLFER David Bransdon has made an immediate impression in his first season on the American Champions Tour. Playing in the tour for players aged 50 and over, Brandson has had four top 10 finishes, with his best result being a third in Virginia earlier this month, which earned him nearly a quarter of a million dollars. Bransdon has collected more than $750,000 in prize money on the Champions Tour this year, qualifying for the season-ending play-offs of which the event in Virginia was the first of three legs.

BOAT LICENCE AND First Aid/CPR courses are currently being offered by the Paynesville Neighbourhood House. Boat licence courses will be held on November 13 and December 18. First aid courses will be staged on November 14 and December 19.

THE WEEKEND’S SALE and District Agricultural Show Society was again a huge event. More than 10,000 people have enjoyed the two days of festivities at the event which showcases the region’s agricultural heritage and also provides opportunities for talented locals to display their art, craft and produce in the pavilions. There was plenty of rides and entertainment for the kids, while the horse events in the main arena kept the huge crowd amused. Friday night’s fireworks a highlight of the weekend.

STRATFORD
WELLINGTON HIGHWAY PATROL officers are investigating a fatal collision in Stratford on Saturday morning. Emergency services were called to reports a car had struck a pedestrian at the intersection of Briagolong Road and Dawson Street about 11.10am, right outside the Stratford police station. The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.
ALL EYES WILL be on the Stratford Short Play Festival to be held at the Stratford Courthouse this Friday night from 7.30pm. One of the five plays to be performed is The Nine Tales of Jinx by Cerise de Gelder, presented by the Bairnsdale Production Line Theatre Company. Scamp has just lost his first life, but thankfully Scamp is a cat and has eight more to go. While waiting to return to the land of the living, Scamp meets Jinx, an elderly cat who has lived many an adventurous life and died many a misadventurous death.

SWAN REACH HOCKEY Club will hold its annual general meeting at the WORLD tonight at 6pm. Discussions will centre on the upcoming 2025 season and anything that needs to be arranged during the off season. The meeting presents a great opportunity to become a valued contributor to the club and have your say on the way it is run. Committee positions available include president, vice president, records secretary, minutes secretary, social media secretary, treasurer and general committee member. are also a number of positions required to be filled for our 2025 season so if you would like to put your hand up for manager, coaching, canteen helper and uniform co-ordinator, just to name a few.
