The dynamic company Good Catch Circus is coming to Bruthen this Saturday, September 7, to perform Casting Off.
Bruthen Arts and Events Council, supported by Regional Arts Victoria, is delighted to bringing this joyful, absurd, witty and poignant circus show to Bruthen Hall – a refreshing and uplifting conversation between three generations.
First created in 2017 for the Sidesault Circus Festival, A Good Catch found themselves talking too much during the creation and rehearsal process. They decided to make the problem the solution, instead of reducing their conversation they practised talking at the same time as flying through the air, hand standing on precarious chair stacks or holding each other up. This experiment created a disarming circus style with no music, yet it makes the heart sing with its thoughtful authenticity.
Casting Off asks the audience to pay attention to the women’s bodies and voices and to recognise the story in both the spoken words and the actions.
Ten-year-olds giggle as 63-year-old Slip throws herself to the floor hoping to be the first down, and 55-year-olds are inspired by her backflips and clowning, while 75-year-olds recognise their inner child in her ridiculous shenanigans.
Teens love to hear 34-year-old Knit argue with Slip about her outdated views and everyone is awestruck by her strength and ability to hold everything together.
Every parent relates to Purl (mother of two) who likes to get on with it because sometimes it’s just easier done than said.
When she tumbles across the stage or leaps from precarious heights her daring feats delight everyone and gender stereotypes just disappear.
Funny and heartfelt, these powerhouse women win you over within minutes of hitting the stage.
In 2018 Casting Off won the prestigious Total Theatre Award for circus at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The Events and Arts Council is once again doing nibble platters for each table. Tickets are available online at Trybooking.
As an added bonus Good Catch Circus is running a circus and physical theatre workshop for youth and adults at 11am on the morning of the show. They will be sharing some of their circus skills in a one-hour workshop.

This is free but you need to book through Bruthen Arts and Events council or Bruthen Presents Facebook.
The show will be performed at Stratford Courthouse Theatre on Friday, September 6.
