The Lakes Entrance combined schools Reconciliation Day event was held at Toorloo Arm Primary School last Friday.
Hundreds of local students gathered as Elder Sandra Patten performed the Welcome To Country and spoke passionately about the need to respect stories, dance and land belonging to the eldest living culture, the Aboriginal people. She also put the challenge to everyone around this year’s theme – Be Brave, Make Change.
Toorloo Arm students, Zdek Baxter and Taryzaih Sellings, represented the student body and also proudly welcomed everyone to Country.
A moving flag raising ceremony accompanied by Uncle Dooka on the didgeridoo symbolised the unity of the day with the Harrison family raising the Koori flag and students Oliver Nguyen and Kye Holley representing their Vietnamese and Indian heritage proudly.
