A cute reminder to always check the pouch of deceased wombats, kangaroos and wallabies was brought into the Post offices recently.
If you come a across an animal that has been hit by a car or shot, it is worth a check to see if they are carrying a baby in their pouch.
If one is found, go online or call Wildlife Victoria so an experienced animal shelter can care for the orphan.
Remember to always keep them warm as they are probably in shock and are used to their mother’s pouch.
A baby wombat was recently discovered by a passerby after its mother was hit by a car on the Princes Highway.
She was being fed with a syringe to begin with but is now on a bottle and weighs 1.6 kilograms. She is expected to live for nearly 30 years.
Shooters, cars and mange are wombat’s biggest killers.
Some residents are concerned that these marsupials are not protected in East Gippsland and something should be done about it.
