A spike in arson attacks over the past week has damaged East Gippsland Shire Council managed assets in both Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale.
Five deliberately lit fires in six days have impacted on four public toilet blocks in Lakes Entrance and the Port of Bairnsdale jetty.
Council’s director operations, Chris Waites, said the night time Lakes Entrance public toilet block fires were at the footbridge (Tuesday), Marine Parade opposite Laura Street (Wednesday), near the Post Office (Thursday) and the Hummocks (Saturday). The jetty at the Port of Bairnsdale was damaged on Sunday night.
“The toilet blocks are open for use, however part of the jetty at Port of Bairnsdale has been cordoned off and repairs will be carried out as soon as possible,” Mr Waites said.
“We’re asking anyone who sees suspicious behaviour to call the police via 000.
“This vandalism is a significant cost to council and ratepayers, with initial estimates of about $3500. “Any assistance the community can provide will be appreciated.”
Victoria Police attended a number of the events.
