Lakes Entrance Action and Development Association (LEADA) has recently formed a Trails and Walks committee which met for the first time recently.
Its goal is to publicise and advocate for improvements to the existing network of Lakes Entrance bike and walking trails.
The trails are along the shores of the lakes, along beaches, through nearby forests, to the entrance and connecting lookouts that have views of the lakes system and ocean.
The main trails are the Hummocks Walk to the Entrance, Krauatungalung Walk which is under construction, Jemmy’s Point Loop Walk, trail along the Esplanade and Marine Parade, new Bullock Island Circuit Walk and the walk to Lake Bunga.
Five of the trails have recently been upgraded or are being completed.
“These six inspirational walks require publicity to encourage further use by residents and visitors,” convenor of the committee Bruce Hurley said.
“Extra signage both directional and interpretive, some minor maintenance and other small improvements would make these trails more accessible.
“Achieving improvements on these trails that commence in Lakes Entrance will be one of the initial foci of the committee.
“The committee will work closely with the council, other authorities and seek funding for this work.”
The committee will also work on attracting funding for additional new trails.
These include the construction of the missing links on a Lake Tyers to Lakes Entrance trail, the first stage of the Aqua Link trail that links the Nyerimilang trails to the Kalimna Jetty, the completion of the Discovery Trail that would link Lakes Entrance to the Bairnsdale to Orbost rail trail, and the completion of the Krauatungalung Walk including the building of the boardwalk on the surf side of Cunningham Arm.
Later the committee intends to advocate for improvements to walks in the vicinity of Lakes Entrance including trails near Nowa Nowa and Metung.
Existing members include representatives from the East Gippsland Shire Council, Gippsland Lakes Complete Health, Gippsland Region Public Health Unit and LEADA.
Skipper Pete who has an extensive knowledge of all walks in and around Lakes Entrance is also a member.
Gippsland Lakes Complete Health and the Gippsland Region Public Health Unit, support the committee’s efforts to promote tracks and trails in Lakes Entrance.
This aligns with public health goals to improve access and promote use of walking and cycling paths in both built and natural areas. By encouraging community led activities, the aim is to boost health and wellbeing across the region.
“Walking these trails helps both my health and appreciation for the magnificent setting that Lakes Entrance enjoys” Bruce said
“A number of LEADA members have asked LEADA to give a priority to improving and publicising Lakes Entrance Walks. If you would like to join the committee, please contact LEADA. Contact details are on LEADA’s website,” president of LEADA, Boyd McPhee said.
