The first Lakes Entrance Junior
Fishing Competition was an overwhelming success, with 63 enthusiastic youngsters
dangling a line.
An incredible 160 fish were caught in just six hours, comprising a remarkable 15 different species, which surprised many of
senior observers.
The event was the idea of inspiring young local, Coen Buck-Roberts, a 10-year-old boy, who just wanted to share his love for fishing and see more kids out doing what he enjoys.
Coen went in to businesses seeking sponsorship and did a huge amount of work behind the scenes getting prizes ready, with all details were run past him and he spent the day barely fishing just to be there for others.
The Gippsland Lakes Fishing Club got right behind without reservation, providing valuable sponsorship and use of the rooms, making sure everyone was fed with yummy sausages.
Coen’s mum Ciara, as well as being a proud parent, was a driving force behind the event, backed by the competition day team of Denise Poletti, Liz McCormack and Sophie Harvey who ensured everything ran smoothly.
Coen and his team were incredibly grateful to everyone involved, conceding it wasn’t perfect, with small issues on the administration end but everyone was laid back, pleasant and patient.
Running events like this can be stressful, so it was positive mindsets of all involved that kept the day ticking along, giving all participants an outstanding experience.
Credit and kudos to the juniors anglers, who showed up in their droves, no one can say there aren’t fish around to catch, as you all proved them wrong.
The next event will be held on November 2.
