Lakes Entrance local Community Sewing Group, East Gippsland (a project of the Lions Club of Gippsland Lakes Lionesses), is again stitching together kindness with their latest donation of handcrafted items to Opal, Parklands Bairnsdale, a local community care facility.
The dedicated group of volunteers has thoughtfully created and delivered an array of quilts, guard of honour quilts, bags, wheeler caddies and lots more, bringing warmth and practicality to elderly residents.
The donation to Opal, Parklands Bairnsdale was appreciated with the hosting by the staff of a barbecue lunch for the sewing group, together with a generous donation of a Spotlight gift card, as a token of their appreciation for the donations received by the facility.
This marks another successful initiative for the sewing group, which continues to make a difference one stitch at a time. As they look ahead, they hope to expand their efforts and inspire others to contribute their skills for the benefit of the wider community.
The sewing group comprises of passionate sewers and crafters from across the East Gippsland, and further afield. They have been working tirelessly to create these items with care and attention to detail. The quilts, designed to provide comfort and warmth, have been carefully crafted in a variety of patterns and colours to brighten up the rooms of residents. Specially made guard of honour quilts will be used to honour residents who have passed, adding a meaningful touch to their farewell.
In addition to the quilts, the group has also sewn wheeler caddies — handy storage pouches that attach to mobility aids — to help residents keep essential items close at hand. Handmade bags were also included in the donation, offering both practical use and a personal touch.
Facility staff expressed deep gratitude for the donations, noting that the items will not only provide comfort but also remind residents that they are valued members of the community.
“It’s heartwarming to see the generosity and effort put into each item. Our residents truly appreciate the kindness and thoughtfulness behind these gifts,” said a spokesperson for the aged care facility.
A representative from the sewing group shared that its goal is to give back to the community while enjoying the shared passion for sewing and crafting.
“We love coming together each week to sew, and knowing that our work brings joy to others makes it even more meaningful,” they said.
Jo Buckler, one of the project coordinators added “The sewing group is an incredibly valuable part of our community, bringing like-minded people together in a space of creativity, learning, and support”.
“Not only does it provide individuals with the opportunity to develop new skills and express themselves through their craft, but it also fosters friendships, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging,” she said.
“For many who attend, it’s more than just sewing — it’s a safe place to share stories, offer encouragement, and feel connected. The impact of this group extends beyond the fabric and thread; it strengthens our community as a whole.
“All of our sewing projects are made using donated fabrics, generously provided by our local community. These contributions allow us to create beautiful and meaningful pieces while promoting sustainability and reducing waste. We are deeply grateful for the support, as it enables us to continue our work and share handmade creations with those who need them most.”
The sewing group also gives back to the community by donating items to Bairnsdale Hospital, Palliative Care, Annie’s Cottage, local aged care communities and other charities. Through their work, they provide comfort and support to those in need, making a meaningful difference at every stage of life.
The East Gippsland Sewing Group meets every Tuesday at the Coast Guard building in Lakes Entrance from 10am until 1pm.
