An opera extravaganza

Gippsland Opera is set to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Opera by the Lakes on Sunday, March 16, at the picturesque Nyerimilang Heritage Park.

This annual event has become a cultural highlight in the region, attracting audiences with its blend of world-class performances and stunning natural surroundings.

The 2025 lineup boasts an impressive array of talent:

– Teddy Tahu Rhodes: Renowned international bass-baritone.

– Antoinette Halloran: Celebrated international soprano, recently acclaimed for her role as Mrs. Lovett in Victorian Opera’s Sweeney Todd.

– Shanul Sharma: International tenor, distinguished for his remarkable vocal range, currently starring in Gandhi in Germany.

– Dimity Shepherd: International mezzo-soprano, returning after a delightful performance last year.

– Will Hardy: Local baritone and musical theatre performer.

– Guy Noble: Australian musical composer, conductor, pianist and broadcaster.

Accompaniment will be provided by the accomplished pianist David McNicol.

Set within a natural amphitheater, Nyerimilang Heritage Park offers breathtaking views over the Gippsland Lakes, enhancing the operatic experience.

Attendees can enjoy gourmet boxed lunches featuring local produce, and Carmen’s Wine Bar will be operating on-site.

There will also be performances from the East Gippsland Brass Band and East Gippsland Symphonia.

“Whilst we do not want to spoil things for our audience by revealing too much of the program, a couple of tasters cannot go astray,” Gippsland Opera’s Andrea Ford said.

“Keith (Ford) has requested the popular and distinguished Guy Noble (incredible conductor and accompanist) to put together one of his very funny ditties. Will Hardy is an exceptional local musician, singer and actor. Many of you will remember him from Bairnsdale Production Line’s Death of a Salesman and the lead role in Boy from Oz at Sale last year. One of his songs will be Tenterfield Sadler.

“Puccini is a favourite with most of us and Shanul Sharma and Antoinette Halloran have the emotional and very beautiful duet O soave fanciulla from La Boheme, while Teddy Tahu Rhodes is singing Toreador’s Song from Carmen.

“The program is always exceptional as every single singer up there is world class.”

Please note, BYO alcohol is not permitted. Car parking is available at the venue.

Tickets are available for purchase through TryBooking.

For more information, visit the Gippsland Opera website.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience a decade of operatic excellence in one of Victoria’s most enchanting settings.
