Lakes Entrance’s defence of its Gippsland Bowls Region midweek premiership began last week with a decisive victory against Bairnsdale at the Bairnsdale Bowls Club.

Lakes won two rinks convincingly and halved the other in the 79-50 victory, led by Mike McKay, Margaret Brandhoj, Kevin and Jennifer Dowie, who won 31-18.

Just as impressive were Maurice Carroll, Peter Alves-Veira, Bill Rowley and Joanne Martin who saluted 29-13. Michael Bratt, Eric Spence, Wallace Mason and Brown escaped with a 19-all draw.

In this week’s match Lakes Entrance hosts Paynesville.

In division two, Lakes 2 and 3 did battle, and what a battle it was, Lakes 2 winning by a solitary shot, 62-61, despite winning just the one rink.

The victory of Ruth McPhee, Stan Short, Hayden Lancaster and Rob Norder 20-13 was enough to see Lakes 2 home.

Rink winners for Lakes 3 were Jeanette Rowley, Joe Hales, Lee Burt, Greg Bertram (21-20) and Stephen Adams, Treen Nodder, Peter Taylor and Geoffrey Rawlings (27-22).

In this week’s matches, Lakes 2 is at home against Bairnsdale, with Lakes 3 playing at Metung.

Lakes 4 defeated Howitt Park by four shots in division three, with Ian Gray, Rob Wilson, Carol and John Hurren victorious 20-16, while Frank Detering, David Ramsay, Heather Todd and John Kimberley played a 21-21 draw in their rink.

Lakes 5 drew with Bairnsdale 41-41, with Robyn Auscote, Margo Short, Sandra Hudson and Ernie Smith leading the way with a 23-18 win.

Lakes 4 has the bye this week, with Lakes heading away to take on Paynesville.
