Wallace Mason played a key role in lifting Lakes 2 to a round two Gippsland Bowls Region division one weekend pennant victory over Howitt Park last Saturday.

Both Lakes Entrance sides were victorious in round two of the Gippsland Bowls Region Superleague competition last Saturday, with Lakes Entrance 2 currently sitting on the top of the ladder, one of only two sides to have scored two wins.

Lakes Entrance 2 sits ahead of defending champion Bairnsdale on the table after a hard-fought victory over Howitt Park on the road.

Two decisive rink victories by Stephen Smith, Lynton Rathjen, Mark Elliott, Wallace Mason (21-11) and Joe Hales, Boyd McPhee, Jeffrey Wilson and Glenn Barker (21-9) enough to get Lakes 2 home by 12 shots, 54-42.

Lakes Entrance 1 prevailed late in its fixture at home against Maffra, winning 62-55.

Mike McKay, Barry Roberts, Bill Rowley and Kevin Brown led the way with a vital 25-17 victory.

Julie Simpson, Scott Davidson, Daffy Rawlings and Mick Burge won their rink narrowly 21-20.

Simpson displayed the form that saw her part of the gold-medal winning Victorian seniors’ side at the recent national championships in Tweed Heads.

In this week’s matches, Lakes 2 is at home to Maffra, while Lakes 1 will host Stratford.

There was only one match this week in division two, with Lakes 4 having the bye, Lakes 3 going down in a nail-biter at home to Bairnsdale, 51-48.

The efforts of Rob Wilson, Stan Short, Ron McKay and Charles Lesiw winning 24-16 keeping Lakes 3 in the match late into the afternoon.

This week Lakes 3 is at home against Bairnsdale, while Lakes 4 travels to Lindenow to face the Cockies.

There was disappointment in division three with both Lakes Entrance sides going down, Lakes 6 was humbled by Bairnsdale 84-13, with Lakes 5 being more competitive going down by just five to Paynesville, 44-39.

Wim Pennings, Jeanette Rowley, Michael Buttifant and Tony Spink were impressive, winning 28-14.

Lakes 5 will host Bairnsdale this week, with Lakes 6 away to Paynesville.

Joe Hales was also pivotal during Lakes 2’s victory over Howitt Park.
