Despite an improved showing from the Lakes Entrance Pelicans women’s team last Saturday, they went down to Morwell by 56 points in round two of the Country Basketball League.
The Pelicans went into the clash low on confidence having been eclipsed by a strong Korumburra outfit in round one by 80 points in front of large home crowd.
It was the Magic’s first match for the season, so they were an unknown quantity, but it didn’t take them long to get their game into gear.
They dominated the first term, scoring at will, the quarter time score 28-14, with Magic players like Micaiah Judilla (23 points), Emily Scholtes (13) and Shantelle Thorburn (10) dominate right from the start.
But to the Pelicans’ credit they knuckled down and defended hard over the next three quarters, restricting the rampant Morwell to 24, 17 and 18, although the defensive game did restrict Lakes Entrance’s ability to score until the final term, even showing off some offensive tricks of their own in the final 10 minutes, as coach Kaylah Dunstan (10), Mehegan Mehegan (6), Nate Bire (5) and Kelly Poynton (5) cashed in the hard defensive work of the whole playing group.
The coaching panel was happy with the improvement from week one to week two and are hopeful with continued improvement in the coming weeks, including the new-found flair in offence, that a victory isn’t faraway.
Lakes Entrance will take on the Pakenham Warriors this Saturday night from 5pm at the Lakes Entrance Youth and Recreation Centre.
