East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (CMA) continues to monitor the Lake Tyers estuary and conditions remain the same.
Monitoring conducted last Wednesday after the recent rainfall showed low dissolved oxygen levels in the lower parts of the water column throughout the lake.
“Whilst oxygen levels remain low within the Lake, the East Gippsland CMA won’t be authorising an artificial opening due to the potential risk to fish,” Bec Hemming, chief executive officer of the East Gippsland CMA, said.
“With school holidays and warmer weather upon us, we expect more visitors to the lakes and beaches. We urge everyone to stay safe around water, particularly areas where water levels are currently high.
“We also remind everyone to be mindful of safety risks around estuaries, particularly when they open naturally or otherwise. Attempting to connect the estuary to the sea can lead to major safety issues and environmental impacts, including significant risks to fish.”
Water quality conditions will continue to be monitored, especially following more rainfall. The East Gippsland CMA, in partnership with other agencies, will continue to assess conditions and implications for a potential estuary opening.
