At just eight years of age, Lakes Entrance young gun, Connor Guillot, recently represented Victoria in the Australian Junior Motocross Championship in Penguin, Tasmania.
It takes nerves of steel, concentration and stamina to race a motorbike against other competitors, but to do it at just eight years of age also takes something very special.
Connor finished 13th overall, with his best result of a sixth place finish in race three.
Connor’s father, Adam, was proud to see his son achieving his goals.
“He had heaps of fun hanging out with mates and meeting new ones from all over the country,” he said.
“Connor was nervous but very excited to travel to Tasmania. He now knows what the Australian titles would be like in the future and has new goals to work towards to improve his riding to continue to compete against the best in Australia.”
At such a young age Connor still has a lot to learn about the manoeuvring of the bike and the mental battles of competing at such a big event.
“His goals are mental challenges as well as physical and technical, like having self confidence and believing in his own ability, to working on his cornering, ruts, jumps and keeping a consistent high speed,” Adam said.
“Achieving four hole shots out of five race starts was a highlight of the trip as it’s something he has worked hard on in training all year.”
A hole shot is achieved when a rider is the first one around the first corner after the starting line.
Connor is already training for next year’s Australian Junior Motocross Championship and feels confident that he has already experienced a race of the size and talent of the championships.
Connor will be at the top of the age bracket for the 50cc class and he wishes to improve on his results from this year with always having fun as his main motivation.
As Connor always says “a happy rider is a fast rider”.
