The iconic paddle boats at the end of the footbridge in Lakes Entrance were packed up last Tuesday, leaving townspeople and tourists looking for answers.
Lakes Entrance Paddle Boats and Catamaran Hire proprietor, Noel Manning, who has operated the business for 37 years, said he was very distressed over the episode.
He was reluctant to share the finer details of why he had removed most of his gear, for fear of legal ramifications, however did say the issue went back to his licence to operate.
“The business has been closed by council, I want to operate but I can’t. It has turned very, very nasty,” Mr Manning said.
“I have not deserted the town, I haven’t walked away, it’s now up to the shire.
“I’m not giving up yet. One thing I can guarantee is I will not leave the town.”
Mr Manning said he had sent emails and letters to council over the past few years but had not received a reply.
However, from council’s perspective, it has had the same trouble with Mr Manning.
East Gippsland Shire Council director development, Paul Holton, said council had
attempted to contact the Lakes Entrance Paddle Boats operator on many occasions over the past 18 months in regard to licence renewal.
“Over the last 18 months council has written to the paddle boat operator on many occasions as well as tried to contact him by phone. He has never acknowledged our letters or returned our calls,” Mr Holton said.
“The operator had not renewed his licence nor paid annual licence fees since being offered a new term in 2017.
“Additionally, he has not provided council with evidence that he carries appropriate insurances or has a licence to trade.
“The decision was made to advise the operator that in the absence of the required documentation and fees, council would have no choice other than to impound the paddleboats and other equipment.
“This is an unfortunate situation, however without a licence and no proof of insurance, council and the public would be exposed to considerable and unacceptable risk should the paddle boats continue to operate under such circumstances.”
