Another huge week of golf at the Lakes Entrance Golf Club was headlined by outstanding performances from lady members across several competitions.
Saturday’s medley stableford attracted a field of 85 players in sunny but breezy conditions and was dominated by Julie Anne O’Neill, who claimed both “D” grade and overall honours with a sensational 43 points. Needless to say, her 54 handicap looks set for a significant trim.
Dean Grining compiled an impressive round off his three handicap to win “A” grade with 37 points, while Norm Backman took out “B” grade with 35 points.
The most hotly contested division was “C” grade, where Michael Spruzen got the nod on countback from Allen McKenna after both finished tied on 38 points.
Tuesday’s medley stableford drew the second-biggest field of the week with 72 entrants taking to the course. Ruth McPhee led the field home, securing 41 points to take out both “C” grade and overall victory.
Spud Le Maitre claimed “A” grade on countback from young gun Hunter Douglass after both registered 36 points, while Greg Hayes returned to the winner’s circle in “B” grade with 37 points. Tom Stubbs provided the highlight of the day, beaming after eagling the par-four 13th hole.
In tough scoring conditions on Wednesday, Sandi East took out the ladies monthly medal while also securing “B” grade with a score of plus two. Overall and “A” grade winner Justin Gray was one of the day’s few exceptions, firing an even-par round.
Player numbers were also up for the Ruthless and Toothless competition, with 39 players taking to the fairways. Craig O’Brien continued his strong recent form to win “A” grade by three strokes over runner-up Peter Knight.
Don Haley won “B” grade on countback ahead of Tony Fedat and Gary Knox.
The putting award went to Greg Watton, while Ken Butler didn’t leave empty-handed, taking home the NAGA award.
