Gizelle Phillips and Apola Weel had an outstanding round of golf last Wednesday to take out the medley 4BBB stableford event at the Lakes Entrance Golf Club.
The Phillips/Weel combination finished with a sensational 47 points, taking victory from Norm Backman and Les Beckett, who banked 43 points, which on most occasions would be significant enough to secure the win.
Backman and popular member Di Dickson both picked up two nearest the pin awards.
Last week at Ruthless and Toothless, Dallas Riseley took out “A” grade by seven shots from Brad Hay and Bruce Wilmshurst, while in “B” grade Alan Radford was a three-shot winner over Rex Mockett and John Anderson.
Not surprisingly, given his dominance, Riseley won the putting with just 11 putts.
George Deimezis didn’t go home empty-handed, winning the weekly NAGA award.
Thursday’s medley stableford attracted 79 players, with fields beginning to fall away as some of the older members migrate north for the winter.
Beckett continued his outstanding recent form, winning “C” grade and overall with 40 points. The other winners were Hunter Douglass (“A” grade) and Bernie Hoppe (“B” grade), both carding an impressive 38 points.
Saturday’s medley stableford saw 113 players hit the fairways and was led home by “D” grade player Lee Burt, who had an exceptional 44 points off a handicap of 29.
Neil Howell had a great day, taking “B” grade with 40 points, while David Hatt snared “A” grade with 38 and Brendan Bassett was victorious in “C” grade with 37 points.
Bassett was one of the early players out, finishing by noon so he could suit up for the Lakes Entrance reserves, where he was best on ground in their huge win over Stratford at the Lakeside Oval.
Ladies’ club champion Renee Percival was again to the fore, winning two nearest the pins.
