Long-standing school crossing supervisor Greg Alfred retired from his post at Toorloo Arm Primary School last Friday, with students, teachers and parents gathering to bid him farewell.
Greg and his wife will soon move to a retirement village in Ballarat, where they are looking forward to travelling and enjoying a slower pace of life.
“I had a very successful career as a public servant with the Federal Government in Canberra before retiring and moving to this area, but nothing beat this job,” Greg said.
“The children have been beautiful, and so have the teachers and wider community. I have been able to remember all the kids’ names and I will really miss them.
“I also worked at BWS and it got to the stage where former students were driving in to buy drinks and say hello. It’s a delight to see them grow from primary school students into adults.
“It ended up being a busy time when we moved here because we also ran holiday accommodation, so now it will be time for us, with plenty of caravanning ahead.
“A lot of people have wished me well, even those without children who drive past every day and give me a wave. It is a great community and so friendly,” Greg said.

Toorloo Arm Primary School principal Alli Hopkins said Greg would be greatly missed.
“He has been the most consistent and dedicated supervisor,” she said.
Students presented Greg with a box on his final day containing individual cards made to thank him and wish him well for the future.
