Lakes Entrance’s Main Beach is set to be
transformed into a netball court this Saturday, for the annual beach netball tournament, another day of fast–paced competition and summer fun.
The event is part of a popular Netball Victoria initiative that first debuted in Lakes Entrance in January 2016, drawing more than 250 participants and spectators to the sand and creating a festival–style atmosphere by the sea.
Each year, the event draws teams from across the region to compete on temporary courts marked out on the sand, putting a unique twist on traditional netball with barefoot play and shorter, high–energy matches. Beach netball retains the core rules of the sport but is played on a half court in the sand, making it accessible and fun for players of all ages and abilities, including divisions for juniors, seniors and social competitors.
Organisers are gearing for another huge day, the event as much about community and enjoyment as it is about competition, with spectators able to watch from the shoreline while soaking up the summer atmosphere.
With Lakes Entrance a popular holiday destination at this time of year, the tournament is expected to draw strong crowds and add to the town’s busy summer calendar. of events.
Alongside the on–court action, the event provides a welcome boost for local businesses, with cafés, shops and accommodation providers anticipating increased foot traffic throughout the day.
With sun, sand and sport combining in one of East Gippsland’s most iconic locations, the beach netball event is shaping up again as a highlight of the summer for both participants and spectators alike.
