Bairnsdale Cricket Association action resumes this weekend following the Christmas break, with a round of two-day “A” grade fixtures scheduled for Saturday
and Sunday.
Lakes Entrance will enjoy an extended break, sitting out this round with its second bye of the season. The Seagulls return to action on January 17 hosting Lindenow South Glenaladale at the Lakeside Oval
in a rematch of last season’s one-day
grand final.
Currently sixth on the ladder with four wins, five losses and one no result, Lakes Entrance faces a highly competitive run home. Last year’s grand finalists Lindenow South Glenaladale (40 points) and Wy Yung (40) have opened a clear gap at the top and are looking strong contenders for the premiership.
Orbost (30 points) sits third on percentage ahead of Lucknow, while West Bairnsdale (28) is fifth, two points clear of the Seagulls. Paynesville (24) remains in touch with finals contention, while St Mary’s Nagle and Meerlieu are now too far back to challenge this season.
With five rounds remaining, Lakes Entrance is well placed to push for finals and potentially emulate last season’s semi-final performance provided it
can string together consistent performances. The final five rounds include four two-day matches and one limited-
overs fixture.
Following the bye, the Seagulls face Lindenow South Glenaladale at home in the one-day match, before two-day encounters against St Mary’s Nagle (away), Paynesville (away) and Orbost (home). While the draw presents some significant challenges, there are opportunities to gain points against sides struggling this season.
Consistency with the bat remains the team’s biggest obstacle. Inability to produce consecutive victories has hindered their campaign. Ryan Hooper, Ben John and Ollie Chaplin have all made key contributions, but a broader spread of run-scorers will be required to secure a finals berth.
The bowling attack remains a strength, with Noah Dodd, Kaleb Day and imports Scott Tite and Chaplin all capable of dismantling opposition line-ups efficiently.
In “B” grade, Lakes Entrance will host Metung-Swan Reach in a local derby at the Lakes Entrance Recreation Reserve. The match is expected to attract strong interest, with plenty of holidaymakers in town.
