Crossing Church Street in Lakes Entrance will be safer and easier with East Gippsland Shire Council set to install improved lighting and two new raised pedestrian crossings.
The crossings – one at the intersection with Mechanics Street and another at Bulmer Street – will prioritise pedestrians, giving them right of way, which will make crossing safer and encourage drivers to
slow down through this busy stretch.
Lighting will be upgraded at both locations, and the Mechanics Street crossing will include flashing lights to draw attention to the high number of people using it.
The tender for construction will be released this month, with construction anticipated in 2026.
Work will be conducted outside of peak holiday seasons.
The project is funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) through its Safer Local Roads and Streets Program.
The crossings will be a welcome improvement for locals and visitors who travel between homes, shops and services along Church Street.
Pedestrians will have priority, which means drivers will need to stop and give way – making it much safer for everyone, especially families, older residents and anyone using prams or mobility aids.
DRAINAGE INVESTIGATIONS
Council is also carrying out drainage investigations across Lakes Entrance.
This work aims to improve stormwater and road infrastructure, and reduce flooding along Eastern Beach Road, Cunninghame Street, Robin Street and Beveridges Road.
