A loud explosion and tremor heard across East Gippsland on Sunday
afternoon, November 1, sparked widespread speculation on social media, with residents sharing photos, videos and theories about the cause.
The boom was heard across much of the region shortly after 4pm.
Many locals reported seeing a bright flash in the sky before the sound rolled through.
Within minutes, community pages were flooded with posts from residents trying to work out what had happened.
The most common theory was it was a meteorite and/or space junk.
Some suggested the noise was most likely caused by falling space debris entering the atmosphere and creating a sonic boom.
No damage or debris has been reported, but the unexplained event kept East Gippsland buzzing online well into the night.
