Seniors Week 2025 for Lakes Entrance Senior Citizens Club was a busy and fun time.
On top of their usual activities, members were able to mix and mingle on both Thursday and Friday and new members joined up and joined in the activities.
“Our inaugural Scone Challenge was a success because everyone chipped in to get things done,” club president Judy Jerkins said.
“The clubhouse was decorated and ready for whatever happened. Not knowing exactly how many people to expect was a challenge, but I doubt anyone left the building hungry, or keen to eat more scones soon.
“We had them in all shapes and sizes and they were fabulous. Thank you to everyone who baked or came to eat and share the fun.
“Club members had been gathering ‘advertising merchandise’ for a few weeks beforehand, so when Rex Fish’s old surf fishing rod went up into the air, with balloons dangling off it, I did a silent cheer. I thought it looked great, although I’m not sure Rex would
have agreed.
“The two signs made for us by the Lakes Entrance Men’s Shed were visible and useful and drew a crowd. Nearly 70 people came to eat scones and be sociable.”
The day was full of scones, music and lots of chatter. Line dancers put on a display, and the square dancers did too, making everyone tap their feet. Joy and laughter rang loudly throughout the hall all day long.
“In the kitchen, the smooth efficiency was amazing,” Judy said.
“Volunteers whipped cream, spread butter and jam and got scones and cuppas out into the hall at a rapid pace. Having a fully equipped kitchen makes all the difference.
“Our pool players Ron, Eddie, Jeff, Keith, Frank and Barry loved their aprons and bow ties but may never want to eat another scone again. They had trouble tasting everything but ultimately chose scones baked by: June Gudgin – ‘Sweet’, Olivia Gourley – ‘Schools’, Meryl Hammond – ‘Wow that’s different’, Trena Norda – ‘Plain’ and Ailsa Murray – ‘Savoury,’ as the winners.
“June Gudgin’s scones had the most votes on the day and she now has bragging rights to claim she makes the best scones in Lakes, although this may be disputed by Mel Fredericks who shared her recipe with June a long time ago.”
Twenty club members enjoyed a leisurely cruise down to Metung and back on the Lonsdale, hugging the shoreline to keep out of the wind the following day.
“Tony and Mel’s cruises never disappoint, so it was a lovely way to slow down, sit quietly and smile, together,” Judy said.
