From October 13 until November 15, 2025, all the police stations in ED6 including Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Orbost, and outlying stations, will be a collection point for the Share the Dignity ‘It’s in the Bag’ campaign.
This campaign is a cherished Christmas appeal encouraging everyday Australians to fill a teen, adult or a mum and bub bag with essential items, a few little luxuries and a simple handwritten note.
Acting sergeant at Lakes Entrance Police, Felicity O’Bryne, said this was the first time her station had joined the appeal and become a collection point.
“We see people who need help on an everyday basis and this gives us an opportunity to assist,” Felicity said.
“Women In Policing came up with the idea to be involved and we encourage the public to donate to this cause. It encourages awareness and we hope the help does not stop.”
Felicity invites anyone to just come into any of the stations and donate goods, a box will be provided at reception. These items donated will be checked and tagged and gifted to women, girls and those experiencing financial hardship or homelessness.
Women and Girls waking up in Domestic Violence shelters or homeless refuges on Christmas Day will receive one of these bags. Every donation, big or small, helps restore dignity to someone who is doing it tough.
The public or organisations can help by filling a bag with essential items such as shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, pads or tampons. You can also add a few extra special touches, maybe a lipstick, perfume, a notebook and a message of support.
Act Sgt O’Byrne encourages all to talk to
the community, family and friends, tell them where the collection points are, and encourage them to donate.
“I am also encouraging high schools to get involved, talking to the wellbeing managers and getting the kids involved to share in the drive,” she said.
