The key to living longer

Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows life expectancy at birth to be around 81.1 years for males and 85.1 years for females.

Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows life expectancy at birth to be around 81.1 years for males and 85.1 years for females.

Living a long and healthy life is a goal shared by many, and Australia, with its high quality of life, offers a favourable environment.

Here’s a breakdown of key statistics and factors that contribute to longevity and well-being

in Australia:

LIFE EXPECTANCY

Australia consistently ranks among the

countries with the highest life expectancies in the world.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), recent data shows life expectancy at birth to be around 81.1 years for males and 85.1 years for females.

However, a significant gap exists between the life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-indigenous Australians.

Life expectancy can vary across different regions, with those living in remote areas often experiencing lower life expectancies, while socioeconomic factors also play a large role.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is essential.

Physical activity: Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining cardiovascular health and overall well-being.

Avoiding harmful habits: Limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking are vital.

ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE

Australia’s robust healthcare system provides access to quality medical care, contributing to early detection and treatment of diseases.

Preventative medicine such as cancer screenings and regular check ups are very important.

Recognising and addressing mental health concerns is increasingly important.

Access to mental health services and support networks plays a significant role in overall well-being.

Australia generally enjoys clean air and

water, although climate change is posing increasing challenges.

Maintaining a healthy environment is crucial for long-term health.

KEY STATISTICS AND INSIGHTS

Chronic diseases: Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, are major causes of death in Australia.

Health-Adjusted Life Expectancy (HALE): This metric measures the number of years a person can expect to live in good health. It provides a more comprehensive picture of well-being than life expectancy alone.

It is important to remember that although Australia has a very high average life expectancy, that there are large disparities between different groups of people within Australia.

By focusing on healthy lifestyle choices, accessing quality healthcare, and prioritising mental well-being, Australians can increase their chances of living longer, healthier lives.
