East Gippsland Hockey Association’s 60th anniversary celebration will be held on September 6 at the Bairnsdale RSL from 7pm.
It will follow an action-packed preliminary finals day, with games in all age groups played at the WORLD facility.
At a meeting held in 1965, 12 women decided to get together and form the East Women’s Gippsland Hockey Association, which was later renamed to East Gippsland Hockey Association (EGHA).
Hockey had been played for many years prior to this time, but this was a bringing together of teams from Orbost, Bairnsdale, Sale and Maffra to play against each other, forming a hockey association.
Six teams played during this first season, two each from Orbost and Bairnsdale and one each from Sale and Maffra.
The grand final for that inaugural
season was played between the two Orbost teams.
Life members of the EGHA have been invited to join with past and present members to celebrate the anniversary.
The evening will proudly welcome some of those ladies from that first meeting – the Foundation Members.
During the night, best and fairest awards for the 2025 season will be presented to under 14, 16 and 18, as well as women’s and open teams.
