On a cold but sunny winter’s day there were 57 members and one visitor at the July Lakes Entrance Garden Club meeting.
The annual general meeting will be held at the club’s August meeting – all clubs need new committee members to keep vibrant.
The club’s spring trip will be to Merimbula in November.
This month was the Mid Winter Madness Pyjama Party event and there were big wrap around dressing gowns with flowers, puppies, checks and stripes, fluffy slippers, sublime kimonos, a bright Betty Boop top, warm hoods and those shocking pink socks.
And the prizes: Sheryl MacCubbin was first and Bob Wishart second.
Susie Swann was showbench judge and there was a lovely entry for her: Camelias shining in winter, early orchids, hellebore, daffodils and succulents too.
The beginner’s luck section was won by Rae Whelan with a vase of beautiful fluffy pink edged with white camelia. First in the five cuts section was Shirley Bardwell with an orchid, daphne, camelia plus foliage. Second was Dearne Albert with her entry in white colours with bold variegated foliage.
In the arrangement depicting winter, first was Diane McStay and second was Shirley Bardwell, both entries overflowing with all those winter flowers – grevillea, isopogon, hakea, erica and many more.
Daphne had its own section this month and first was Faye Rowe with her pink daphne, while second was Truus Adams with a white bloom.
In the azalea section first went to Sheryl MacCubbin with her bright red ruffled bloom. This was the only entry – it is early in the season.
There were four entries in the orchid section, all cymbidiums. First place went to Sheryl MacCubbin for her spike of tan outer petals with white and a burgundy centre. Second was Truus Adams’ entry in dusty pink.
In the three cuts section Joy Davenport won with eremophila, westringia and deep red leucrodendron. Second was Ann Barker with thryptomene, euphorbia and an orange rose.
The potted plant section was for cyclamen this month. First went to Sheryl MacCubbin for her plant with flowers of deep burgundy edged with white in an unusual pot made of rope painted white. Second was Dearne Albert with bright pink blooms in a matching bright pink pot – both lovely.
The floral art theme was Christmas in July and first went to Diane McStay with her entry in reds, yellows and green festooned with shiny red baubles and a pretty white dragonfly.
Second was Dearne Albert with green foliage from woolly bush and conifers with red berries and a happy Santa in the centre.
Guest speaker was Glenda Mackay. She talked about and demonstrated pruning roses and taking cuttings to propagate more of these wonderful plants.
The August meeting is Monday, August 18, at 1.30pm at the Lakes Entrance Mechanics Hall.
