The Sale community gathered in large numbers to mark the beginning of NAIDOC Week with a moving flag raising ceremony hosted by the Ramahyuck District Aboriginal Corporation.
The event embraced this year’s powerful theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” celebrating
the vital role that young First Nations people play in shaping the future while honouring the wisdom and guidance
of Elders.
The morning began with a traditional smoking ceremony, setting a reflective and respectful tone for the proceedings. Inspiring speeches followed, before the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags were proudly raised. The sense of community fellowship continued over a barbecue lunch, allowing attendees to connect and share stories.
A key highlight of the event was the presentation of the local NAIDOC Week Awards, recognising individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions to the community.
The deserving recipients for 2024 were:
Elder of the Year: Aunty Bess Yarram
Community Member of the Year: Jye Morris
Youth of the Year: Allora Quigley
Sportsperson of the Year: Kiah Douthat
Educational Achievement Award: Mercedes Coombs
Organisation of the Year: Victoria Police – Sale Police Station
The ceremony was a powerful and positive start to a week of events across Gippsland dedicated to celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
