In 2025, the Kingfisher Dragon Boat Club Paynesville — a group of passionate local paddlers — embarked on an unforgettable journey to participate in this iconic event.
Dragon boating is more than a sport; it is a fusion of rhythm, teamwork, and community spirit. The Paynesville Kingfisher Dragon Boat Club epitomises these values, thriving on camaraderie and determination.
With its roots anchored in the waters of the Gippsland Lakes, the club has grown into a vibrant community of enthusiasts dedicated to fostering both athletic excellence and social connection.
The decision to participate in the Vogalonga was not taken lightly. The event, covering approximately 30 kilometres through Venice’s waterways, is a test of endurance and resolve.
The Paynesville Kingfisher Dragon Boat Club spent months preparing for this adventure, combining rigorous physical training with meticulous planning.
The Vogalonga’s course is a winding journey through Venice’s famous canals and the lagoon.
Starting at St Mark’s Basin, the route offers breathtaking views of the city’s historic architecture, including ornate bridges and colourful facades. The dragon boat, with its rhythmic paddling and vibrant design, added a splash of Australian charm to the spectacle.
For the members of the Paynesville Kingfisher Dragon Boat Club, the 2025 Vogalonga was a transformative experience. It strengthened their bonds as teammates, expanded their horizons and enriched their understanding of global paddling traditions.
The event also served as a reminder of the importance of preserving Venice’s waterways, which are threatened by motorised boats and environmental challenges.
A few Kingfishers also went on to Singapore to join and train with a local Singapore Dragonboat Club (Austcham Paddle Club) It was extremely interesting learning their different training techniques.
