A full and lively crowd filled the Kalimna Hotel last Friday evening as music and poetry lovers from across Lakes Entrance and surrounds gathered for
the venue’s first Open Mic Night, hosted by local musician
Olivia Lay.
The room buzzed with creativity, laughter, and applause as solo artists, small groups and poets of all ages took to the stage to share their stories, songs and spirit.
From heartfelt original ballads to lively spoken word, the night had a little something for everyone. Families, friends and strangers came together in a warm and welcoming environment, proving that the Kalimna Hotel was the perfect place for such an event.
Several attendees praised
the venue’s cosy atmosphere and stunning outlook, saying it added to the magic of the night.
The event was the brainchild of Olivia Lay, a passionate local performer well-known for her music and community spirit. While she has hosted open mics before, this was her first time bringing the concept to the Kalimna Hotel. The night coincided with the release of Lay’s new single, Train of Thought, adding another exciting milestone to the occasion.
“I’ve always played and loved music since I can remember,”
Lay said.
“I started performing in school and then later at open mics. In 2019 I won the regional Battle of the Bands competition (thanks to Mike Elrington who was one of the judges), which really kickstarted my career and I’ve been gigging ever since.”

Lay, who has supported acts like Thirsty Merc, Ruby Fields, Baker Boy and Nathan Cavaleri, said the motivation behind the open mic nights came from personal experience.
“When I started playing music, I was too nervous to perform and supportive open mics really helped me build confidence. I feel open mics are a crucial stepping stone needed for artists. I love seeing the sense of belonging created among musicians—networking and social connection is crucial for creatives,” she said.
Among the night’s standouts was Aquila Tavai, a recent arrival to the area who charmed the crowd with three soulful covers that showcased his rich vocals and natural stage presence.
“What a fun night to perform, listen and connect with community,” he said.
“Getting up there, I was so nervous, but halfway through the first song the nerves fell away when I realised people were enjoying my music.
“Everyone was so supportive and kind. I’ll be bringing my siblings along next time. The open mic was such a great intro to Lakes’ music scene — can’t wait for the next one.”
Another highlight came from Jesse Kidd, drummer for local band Frankee Nowhere, who took the stage with his three young children — Amaya (9), Zalie (5), and Paxton (2½) — to perform an original tune about the family cat.
“A fantastic, family-friendly event for all ages,” Jesse said.
“A welcoming, cosy atmosphere in a wonderful venue in Lakes Entrance. It’s perfect for anyone and everyone that has the itch to express themselves in an artistic manner, with a very supportive community keeping the arts alive in Lakes Entrance.”
Young Amaya added, “it was really fun! And I was really excited.”
The next Open Mic Night will return to the Kalimna Hotel on Friday, June 13. The event remains open to solo performers, small groups, poets and even the occasional stand-up comic. No registration is required — just show up on the night. Those wanting more information or wishing to discuss a potential performance can contact Olivia directly.
With its mix of talent, heart and hospitality, the Kalimna Hotel Open Mic Night is quickly establishing itself as a must-attend event for locals and visitors alike.
Offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels at home, it’s a great night out and a celebration of creativity — proof that Lakes Entrance’s music and arts scene is alive, thriving, and creating a space where all artists are embraced, encouraged to connect, perform and shine.
