Lakes Entrance Croquet Club held a fabulous weekend of croquet, hosting the annual singles tournament last weekend with the East Gippsland weather not disappointing.
Some superb croquet was to be seen by all players from a wide area of Victoria, including Williamstown, Terang, Monash, Mornington, Howlong, Traralgon, Morwell, Warragul, Bairnsdale, Sale, Wonthaggi
and Drouin.
Twenty four members joined together for a Singles Level Play Tournament, with eight players contesting each of the three sections. They all played seven games over the weekend.
There were many challenging games with splendid skills and tactics creating a great exhibition. Some splendid croquet was played, especially in section one where three players finished with five wins and two losses with Richard Parks from Williamstown winning ahead of Heather Bradbury from Bairnsdale by seven hoops.
Placing third was Penny Morrison McGill from Morwell, 12 hoops behind the winner.
In section two, two players finished with six wins and one loss, Bob Quayle from Drouin the winner ahead of Helen Edwards from Monash by nine hoops.
It was a similar scenario in section three with two players finishing with six wins and one loss with Kevin Young from Morwell placing four hoops ahead of Lynette Taylor from Traralgon.
During the year the club had made several alterations to the clubrooms by adding an extra toilet and adding an office area.
These alterations where put to the test at the tournament and worked extremely well.
Not only did the catering staff have more room in the club house but the administration ladies where able to have their space to record the scores without interruption.
With in excess of 40 people at the facility, the extra toilet was most useful and much more convenient than a portable one.
Club members took on their rolls magnificently and effectively in order to participate a well-run tournament. This includes the grounds team who not only prepared the courts but set up for the early starts of each day and the packing up at the conclusion of each day of the weekend.
The catering team coordinated a magnificent array of food to keep the players well fed and providing refreshments including soup.
The club will now prepare for a Doubles tournament in October where they already have a full field entered.
