It was a tough day for the Seagulls in round six of East Gippsland netball against a formidable opponent in Wy Yung, who won six of the seven matches at the Lakeside Oval.
The shining light for Lakes Entrance was the performance of the unbeaten under 17 side who locked in top spot with a confident victory over the second-ranked Tigers, who also went into clash unbeaten and keen to make a huge statement.
After an even first term, Lakes opened a break in the second term, turning a three-goal half time lead into a 28-19 victory.
The team’s full defensive court pressure in the final term quelled any chance of an unlikely comeback by Wy Yung.
Marissa Warfe and Rahni O’Connor both starred for the Seagulls.
A positive performance in “A” grade from the Seagulls saw them go down by
12 goals, 46-34.
Lakes fought hard over all four quarters, putting together some impressive patches of play which tested and challenged the Tigers.
Sophie Larkin and Skyla White led the way for the Seagulls.
Wy Yung was too strong up the stretch in “B” grade, running out convincing 46-19 winners, while it was a tough day for the “C” graders succumbing 71-4, with Wy Yung coming out with all guns blazing, their shooters converting at an incredible rate.
The awards for the Seagulls went to Bree Irvine, who was strong through the mid court, and Rebecca Williams.
It was another hard day at the office in “D” grade, with Wy Yung winning by 45
goals, 56-11.
The Seagulls are still finding their feet and to their credit they kept their composure after an intense early onslaught from the Tigers, their play improving significantly against quality opposition as the match worked into the second half.
Harriet Copeland and Ginger Svetlik battled hard for the young Seagulls unit.
The under 15 match was hard fought with Lakes not without its chances, eventually going down by eight goals, 36-28.
There were significant patches throughout where the teams traded goals and the Seagulls took the match right up to their well-drilled opponents.
Wy Yung gained an advantage late in the first and third terms, with the second and fourth quarters even contests.
Lakes has showed significant improvement in recent weeks, led by Mia Hamer and Sophie Lina, who both impressed again.
Wy Yung was too good in the under 13s winning 41-16, though the coaches thought the efforts of the young Seagulls wasn’t an indication of the final scoreline, impressing everyone who watched with their determination and dedication to the cause even after it became forlorn.
Ruby Jakins and Isobel Mills were named in the best players.
