The March ride for the Tambo Upper Trail Riding Club was in the Wuk Wuk area. Christa Treasure took on lead rider duties with 19 riders joining in.
Despite the warmth, the weather forecast was ominous. However, the organisers were hopeful the ride would be completed before the front came through. The horses were steady and walked out freely with lots of chatter among the riders who were enjoying the open tracks.
A mid-morning stop was made for riders to dismount and enjoy a view over the remains of the Mitchell River weir. The weir was constructed in 1893 as a water source for irrigation. In 1894 the wall was damaged by a flood and never repaired with subsequent floods leaving the weir in the condition it is today.
The riders continued on, leaving the bush and traversing across Christa’s picturesque property with lush grazing areas bordered by open bush.
After reaching a stunning view high over the Mitchell River the group rode down to the Lamberts Flat to water
the horses and enjoy lunch on the grassy flat beside the river.
With a check of the weather radar and the dense cloud cover approaching, the group opted to take an easier, quicker route back to the floats. This proved to be a good decision with the horses only just loaded into the floats before the heavens opened up with a severe downpour and storm.
The next ride will be earlier in the month than usual due to conflicting events. It will be in the Fernbank area this Sunday, April 6. It will be led by local resident and longstanding club member Lionel Rose. Lionel has been busy mapping out the ride and checking out for damage from recent storms.
The bush in the Limpyers Road area offers diverse riding with small gullies and thick scrubby areas opening up to clear bush, open tracks and pine forest.
There are no significant hills to negotiate so a high level of fitness is not required. The ground underfoot is mainly loamy and soft.
Unmounted muster will be at 9.45am and ride out time will be 10am, take a saddlebag lunch. To reach the start turn onto Limpyers Lane off the Fernbank-Glenaladale Road. At the T junction turn right and stay right to follow the fenceline to the starting point.
Tambo Upper Trail Rides are held in various locations, usually on the third Sunday of every month. New members are always welcome.
