It’s Lakes Entrance Golf Club Championship time, with young Charlie Smythe the first victor taking out the club junior championship last Saturday.
Charlie (69) finished three nett shots ahead of Hunter Douglass (72) with Ben Boers (78) finishing third.
The opening round of the ladies’ club championship was held last Saturday, with Renee Percival, who is chasing her seventh title, getting off to the best possible start.
Percival shot an impressive 81 to lead Nadine Martin (91) by 10 shots, with Jacinta Wilson (99) leading a group of three eight shots back.
The second round will be played today, with the event culminating this Saturday.
In “B” grade, Di Dickson (97) holds a one-shot advantage over Olivia Chester (98), with a further seven players in the 103-108 range.
In the handicap divisions Percival holds a six-shot advantage over Martin and Katrina Fearnley.
The “B” event is a tight contest with Dickson, Chester, Sandi East and Margaret McManus all tied on 75, a shot ahead of Bette Severs.
The men have completed two rounds with Mick McManus looking to have a strangehold on the “A” grade event, leading Barry Brand by eight shots, with Stuart Yates a further two shots back.
In “B” grade, six shots separate the top six players, with Rob Sperring taking a handy two-shot lead over Neil Howell, with Shaun Baker, Douglass, Justin Gray and Sam Anderson all close enough to strike.
It is another close contest in “C” grade with Gerard Kelly leading Ashley Chester, Paul Mifsud and Mark Campisi by one shot, with Westy Stephens, David Cutherbertson and Josh Piper close enough to strike.
Charlie Smythe leads Graham Wells by a shot in “D” grade, with the ageless Ivan Witham and Alan Taylor three shots further back.
It will be an interesting match up in the final round, with 10-year-old Smythe playing with 89-year-old Witham.
The handicap events are just as intriguing, with Nigel Carr a slender leader over Mick McManus in “A” grade, with Brand close enough to strike.
In “B” grade, Baker leads Sperring by a shot, with Howell, Gray, Tim Rhind, Brad Hayllar, Anderson and Douglass still in the mix.
Stephens and Campisi will start all square in “C” grade, with Kelly, Piper, Cuthbertson, Bernie Hoppe, Ashley Chester and Mifsud all capable of figuring if they get it right.
Smythe looks likely to win “D” grade, starting 16 shots in front of Taylor.
The men’s competition will also conclude this Saturday.
