District Governor Elect of Lions District 201V3 Geoff Anderson is concerned the Lakes Entrance Lions Club is to be lost to the local community and has forwarded a statement to the Lakes Post for readers’ consideration.
He has convened a meeting in the town for April 15.
Mr Anderson’s letter reads: The Lions Club of Lakes Entrance was charted on August 15, 1975, and would attain its 50 years of operation in just a few months time. During these years it has been a strong and active club with over 40 active members from time to time.
Membership in the club has now dwindled to just a few participating members and the work involved in administration has fallen on the shoulders of just one or two of these. The members could see little option other than to close the club and return the Charter to Lions International.
As the incoming District Governor, I am concerned at seeing the loss of a Lions Club.
To this end, I attended the regular meeting of the Lakes Entrance Lions Club and found that despite their few members, they remain very active in the community.
Bingo sessions the club conducts every Monday attract around 80 participants. Kindred organisations within the town assist on a rostered basis and these community organisations share in the profits.
The club operates a monthly market on a foodbank basis, this is well patronised and serves a growing need as food prices at conventional outlets surge.
More importantly I found all the members attending the meeting I attended were keen to see the club continue. No one supported closure, but all recognised the need for new members.
The purpose of the meeting will be to showcase Lions, in particular the Lions Club of Lakes Entrance, and of course to seek new members for the club. We hope to see many interested people attending. If only a few attend, and if we get only one new member, the exercise will have been worthwhile.
I look forward to the support of the Lakes Entrance community.
