There was disappointment for Lakes Entrance 1 in the Gippsland Bowls Region Weekend Pennant Superleague series going out in straight sets, unable to match an in-form Paynesville outfit in the preliminary final at the Bairnsdale Bowling Club.
After almost pulling off a surprise victory the previous week against competition measuring stick Bairnsdale, Lakes was expected to bounce back last Saturday and justify its placing as the second-best side in the home and away season.
But it wasn’t to be, Paynesville winning two of three rinks in their 67-49 victory, establishing an early lead and riding the wave home right to the finish in front of a healthy crowd, which showed plenty of support for both combatants.
The only winners for Lakes were Julie Simpson, Scott Davidson, Daffy Rawlings and Michael Bratt 21-15, bouncing back after disappointment in week one of the finals.
It was a less-than-ideal finish to a finals campaign that gained plenty of momentum at Metung last week.
The happiest Lakes Entrance person at Bairnsdale on Saturday was local caravan park operator, Darren Martin, part of the winning Paynesville side that will get its chance to redeem last year’s grand final defeat by Bairnsdale at the Heyfield Bowling Club this Saturday from 1pm.
