The Toorloo Arm Primary School community came together for a wonderful evening of storytelling for their annual Writers Festival.
The celebratory evening shone a light on the creative skills of students from prep to grade six by showcasing their written pieces on the student-chosen theme of ‘Lost’.
In the lead up to the event, students at TAPS worked through the writing process to develop their ideas, plan out their writing, draft, edit and publish their work, with the students being handed the agency to develop their writing craft.
The evening started with a Welcome to Country, presented by grade five student Tarzaiyah Sellings and an acknowledgement of county by principal Kerry Hughes, who presided over the evening’s events which included awards that acknowledged strong narrative structure, original ideas and author’s voice through written text.
The first of the events was the announcement of short-listed students from each grade level starting with grade three, who took the stage before the audience heard readings from the runners up and winners.
Students and families then gathered in breakout rooms for reading circles which gave the opportunity for each student to read aloud their stories to an admiring audience of family and schoolmates from across all grade levels.
