Swan Reach and Nagle hockey clubs clashed last weekend in the local derby, with both clubs showing their support for Mental Health Round by wearing green ribbons.
Nagle also supplied mental health stamped biscuits to further promote awareness of an important cause that effects so many people in the community, directly or indirectly.
The women’s and open matches were played last Friday night in perfect conditions under lights at the WORLD precinct, which is the home ground for both clubs.
Swan Reach was victorious in both games, the women triumphant 3-0, with Molly Ward scoring all three goals.
The men’s game was even more dominant with the scoreline being 5-0, with Molly’s brother, Josh, scoring four goals and Hamish MacGregor one.
Saturday’s games started early at 8.30am with the under 10s and 12s learning the ropes and having some fun, with the sun shining for every game.
Nagle were winners of both matches, 7-1 in the under 10s and 6-0 in the under 12s.
There was better luck in the under 14, 16 and 18 age brackets for Swan Reach.
Swan Reach was victorious 5-0 in the under 14s with Sienna Roberts and Flynn Wong scoring twice and Cole Murphy once.
It was a similar scoreline in the under 16s with Swan Reach coming out on top 4-0, Ayrton Corben and Zakari Shieffelbein both scoring twice.
A much more competitive match was played in the under 18s with the Swans winning 5-2.
Goalscorers were Tajwyn Corben, who scored twice, and Ayrton Corben, Ryan Pruscino and Shieffelbein, who all put it in the back of the goals once.
It was Nagle’s home game and it ran the canteen from a makeshift barbecue stall as new facilities at WORLD are still yet to be handed over to the clubs for use.
With the end of the season looming, both clubs are hopeful the new WORLD facilities will be open in time to host some of the finals matches, which start in five weeks.
After the Nagle and Swan Reach games had concluded, Orbost and Maffra hockey club’s matches were held.
It certainly was a big weekend of hockey in Bairnsdale with the new synthetic field busy and being put to use by many participants.
Maffra was victorious in the under 14s (5-2), under 16s (7-0) and women (4-1).
Orbost was much too good in the under 18s winning 7-1.
