Kelly Smart started baking with her nan many years ago and the seed was sown, falling in love with making elaborate and fun cakes for all occasions and dreamed of one day opening her own shop.
She enrolled in design courses, but with other careers and bringing up a family, cakes were a side hustle until recently.
With the opening of Kelli Cake in Myer Street last Saturday she said “finally the cards have fallen into place and it feels like the right time to go into business”.
It is a real family affair with two of her children, Alexis and Chelsea, working in the new café, with the support of husband Daniel and other family members.
Kelly is big on involving the local community using local suppliers including the jams and Chai teas, local tradies during the set up and even China teacups given to her by various people in town.
She has repurposed as much as possible to set up the shop including the teacups and a beautiful front counter.
Birthday cakes are the strength of the shop and by the look of those in the cabinet it will be the place to purchase that custom-made or special event cake.
“We also offer something special with your cup of tea or coffee including slices, scones, muffins, quiches, baked potatoes, toasted sandwiches and more. We are trialing cold brew coffee and monster milkshakes and there is a big variety of teas all made from tea leaves,” she said.
“My kids named and designed the logo. It is a play on when they were little as I was always baking they would say the Patti Cake rhyme but instead say ‘Kelli cake, Kelli cake, baker’s man, bake me a cake as fast you can,” Kelly explained.
Kelli Cake is open seven days a week, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, weekends and public holidays 10am to 4pm.
