The sun may not have been shining, however Lakes Entrance’s Main Beach shone a light on Australia’s best surf sports athletes last weekend.
The Summer of Surf Victorian Grand Finale rolled into the town, breathing life into the region following the insane storms earlier in the week which left homes and businesses without power and internet, some for days.
While skies were overcast, conditions were near perfect as hundreds of athletes, professional and amateur, including a few young locals, competed in ski, board, swim, iron races and taplin relays vying for important points ahead of the Shannon Eckstein Ironman Classic.
Sunday saw iron racing legends Karlee Nurthen and Matt Poole lead the next generation of life saving and surf sports athletes through an exciting nippers clinic.
Surf Lifesaving Lakes Entrance hosted the event with the support of many local businesses and club president Wally Van Dam couldn’t have been happier with the weekend.
“Thank you to our amazing members of Surf Life Saving Lakes Entrance that volunteered to make this event a success setting up a beach patrol, providing the water safety and first aid, setup and pack up of beach, making officials lunches, managing the clubhouse presentations and debriefs – all members that helped out, we can’t deliver what we do without them,” he said.
