Sucked out the entrance

Lake Tyers once again opened last Thursday morning, but it was not without drama.
Two young teenage boys on their bodyboards thought they would have a paddle down the lake to check the entrance out, but were dragged out by the strong current.
Numerous onlookers rightly panicked and called 000 as the boys momentarily got to the edge of sand, but were then dragged back in and sucked out at a great rate of knots.
“The water rip took them out 200 metres or more, but they thankfully kept hold of their boards,” one onlooker said.
“Those boards probably saved their lives,” he said.

IMAGE: Lake Tyers broke through to the ocean for the second time this year last Thursday following recent significant rainfall. The water in the lake is quite dirty due to flooding waters from Boggy Creek, however East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (EGCMA) has no concerns regarding the quality of the water. “We ask community members to be careful approaching the entrance, as the sand banks can quickly collapse into the rapidly flowing channel,” EGCMA chief executive officer, Graeme Dear, said. INSET: Although two boys had been dragged out by the emptying lake earlier in the day, two more were spotted surfing at the edge of the current later in the day.
