Bullock Island receives facelift

East Gippsland Shire Council’s contractors have been busy resheeting and sealing the road on Bullock Island, one week since taking over committee of management responsibilities.

The bollards in the centre of the main car park have all been removed and this area will be sealed along with the access road. For many years it has been a gravel road full of potholes.

New bins have also been installed at key points around the island. The works are expected to be completed by mid-December.

No road closures will be required during the works, but motorists can expect some delays.

Mayor, Cr John White, said council has heard the community’s needs for a sealed road and rubbish removal to improve the busy areas for recreational fishing over summer.

“We recognise the importance of Bullock Island to the community and economy of Lakes Entrance. It is a highly valued area of prime coastal Crown land that is well used by the community and visitors for a range of recreation and business pursuits,” Cr White said.

“Works have commenced to improve the overall presentation and access of Bullock Island with road sealing works up to the new car park, and the installation of rubbish bins in targeted locations.”

Bullock Island has economic, social and environmental benefits to Lakes Entrance and the broader East Gippsland community, it is a popular fishing and crabbing location for residents and visitors.

“What we are trying to achieve is the best outcome for Bullock Island, visitors and businesses in Lakes Entrance, and our ratepayers. Council has a master plan for Bullock Island and that identifies the need for improved infrastructure, such as toilets,” Cr White said.

Council recently entered into a partnership agreement with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning that makes Council the committee of management for the vacant public open space on Bullock Island, excluding the seawalls.
