Back beach gets upgrade

Metung’s Lake King Back Beach is set for a $240,000 upgrade, with work to start next Monday.

East Gippsland Shire Council mayor, Cr Natalie O’Connell, said stage one, to be completed prior to Christmas, will include earthworks and parking upgrades, the replacement and extension of the footpath network, and the installation of new barbecues and outdoor furniture. This will take six weeks to complete.

“Stage two, to commence after the busy summer holiday period, will include the construction of a deck linking the grassed area to the foreshore and shelters over the barbecue and picnic area,” Cr O’Connell said.

“Metung Village Lake King Back Beach is a popular foreshore reserve and has been identified in the Metung Village Masterplan as an area to be upgraded.

“The masterplan of Lake King Beach was strongly supported by the community when presented in early 2018. A design has been developed to upgrade the area and to improve the enjoyment of the community and visitors alike.”

The foreshore area of Lake King forms an integral part of the Metung village. Visitors and residents have opportunities to undertake a broad range of recreational and water-based activities within and around the foreshore.

“The project will provide improved access and amenity to a popular area of Metung and the upgrades will feature the inclusion of disability compliant parking and accessible outdoor furniture,” Cr O’Connell said.

The toilet block and Lake King Jetty will remain accessible during this stage one of the project. The main picnic area and existing barbecue will be closed to the public for the duration of stage one.

Council has previously engaged a community advisory group to guide the development of the concept designs.

The project is fully funded by council’s capital works budget.
