A fishing trawler came to rest outside the Entrance after being hit by multiple waves on the evening of Tuesday, October 1.
While crossing the bar on the way back from a day of fishing, the Hewardia was hit by a wave and rolled onto its side. It was then hit by another wave and flipped over, resulting in it becoming grounded 200 metres west of the Entrance.
The three fishermen onboard managed to swim to shore. One was flown to the Lakeside Oval and driven to hospital with an apparent foot injury.
The other two men were checked by paramedics and cleared of any serious harm.
For two days after running aground the surf pounded the trawler but part of the vessel was made dry thanks to pumping. A weather event then struck, inundating the majority of the trawler with water once again.
On Monday the trawler was successfully Lakes Entrance and Surrounding Areas dragged from the water to the beach to prepare for salvaging.
Normal Gippsland Ports port operations, including dredging operations, shall continue unless there is a significant change in circumstances that may affect the safe navigation of other vessels during salvage operations.
