Lakes Entrance Girl Guides have been out and about recently, learning about their local environment and getting out into the community.
Having visited their local fire brigade earlier in the term, the girls headed into the bush of the Colquhoun State Forest thanks to Les and Darilyn Goldsmith at Goldsmiths in the Forest and their Australian sensory and flavoursome garden.
The Guides looked, touched and smelled the bush as Les led them around the garden on a tour that was dotted with tasty delights prepared by Darilyn using flavours from the garden. Other more raw experiences included nibbling of reeds used for basket making that tasted like green peas and other leaves that bit into the tongue like strong pepper.
The Guides then headed to another part of the forest to hike part of the Lakes Discovery Trail at Logging Crossing where they had lunch before baking apples in the campfire attended by dedicated supporter, Paul Treadwell, as the girls hiked.
On August 25, the Lakes Entrance Guides headed to Lakeview Aged Care to sing for and with the residents. Ellie Bennier played beautifully while the girls were accompanied by Maggie Suker, of the Lakes Entrance Ukes and Voices, who helped with the singing and played her ukulele.
The residents were most appreciative of the visit, joining in with some of the older songs including the Pizza Hut Song that one of the residents remembered from her own guiding days in Lakes Entrance. On September 8, the local Guides served at
Lakes Entrance Dramatic Society and Lakes Entrance Girl Singers’ High Tea at the Hall, each responsible for a number of tables, ensuring tea pots were kept full and trays of food were replenished.
Many compliments were received for the service they provided. Ellie again demonstrated her fluting skills, this time accompanied by sister Guide and flutist, Faith Mitchelson.
An East Gippsland district event was hosted by the Lakes Entrance Girl Guides with a fun day at Footbridge Mini Golf, Ice Cream and Lolly Shop on September 14 when 23 Guides from Mitchell River, Bairnsdale and Orbost joined the local Guides for a game of mini golf and a barbecue lunch. Girls met new friends and caught up with Guides from other units they had met on previous district gatherings.
