Good Life with Arthritis: Denmark (GLA:D), is an exercise and education program developed by researchers in Denmark, for people with symptoms of hip or knee osteoarthritis.
Senior clinician and physiotherapist, Parivesh Kumar is based at Gippsland Lakes Community Health (GLCH) in Lakes Entrance, and is currently Gippsland’s only accredited GLA:D provider.
“This program reflects the latest evidence in osteoarthritis (OA) research and management. It is designed with the latest research to help people manage and reduce their hip and/or knee pain,” Mr Kumar said.
“OA is the most common lifestyle disease in individuals aged 65 years and older but can also affect individuals as young as 30 years of age.
“Current clinical guidelines recommend patient education, exercise and weight loss as first line treatment. In Australia, treatment often centers around surgery so the GLA:D Australia program is being welcomed by those seeking a better and safer alternative.
“I am very excited to be Gippsland’s only provider of this program and I believe this program can help many people regain their ability to live an active independent life.”
The GLA:D Australia program consists of:
- An initial appointment to gather information about your current functional ability.
- Two education sessions about OA and how the GLA:D Australia exercises can improve joint stability, and how to retain this beyond the program.
- Group therapy sessions twice a week for six weeks, to improve muscle control, which leads to reduced symptoms and improved quality of life.
“GLA:D Australia is a program for anyone experiencing any hip and/or knee osteoarthritis symptoms,” Mr Kumar said. In Denmark, research from the GLA:D program found symptom progression was decreased significantly. Other outcomes included reduced pain, decreased painkillers, and less people on sick leave. GLA:D participants also reported increased levels of physical activity 12 months after starting the program.
On Thursday 1 August from 5.30pm-6.30pm GLCH is running a free education session about how the GLA:D program can help you manage your hip or knee pain. Light refreshments will be provided but places are limited, so call GLCH before 30 July to reserve your spot.
