In June 2018, Caravan Industry Association of Australia officially launched the Follow the Sun Relay, which recently stopped in Lakes Entrance.
This is an initiative, which invites everyday Australians to participate on a leg of the Winnebago’s 12-month trip around Australia.
The relay involves different people undertaking different legs of the journey.
The participants share photos, videos and blog posts showcasing the beauty of the places they visit. They also introduce some of the characters they meet along the way.
The Winnebago has already made its way through Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia.
The current travellers are the Reeve family.
They are eager to live life a little off script and now they are doing just that.
Fourteen months ago Adam and Mia, along with their children Jett (11) and Skye (9), packed up their lives and began a trip exploring Australia.
Now, they have temporarily swapped their 4WD and caravan for a Winnebago motorhome.
The Reeve family was given the Melbourne to Sydney leg of the Follow the Sun Relay and were recently in Lakes Entrance.
“It was an easy drive and we were greeted by the very friendly staff at Eastern Beach Holiday Park on arrival,” Mia said.
“It is a very family friendly park and is only a short stroll to the beach.
“A local woman recommended we go for a walk across the footbridge, visit the lookout and have a meal at the Water Wheel Tavern,” she said.
“We like going on bush walks, snorkelling, making campfires and just exploring an area. We are so happy that we got to do this.
“The area we’re going to for Follow the Sun is actually one of our contenders for where we want to move to in the future. We love spending time out of cities.”
The lookouts along the highway near Jemmys
Point were a highlight for the family. They also really enjoyed reading the information boards about the history of the town.
One morning they enjoyed a stroll to the local market where they were amazed by the diverse array of stalls.
“The weather was just superb for our whole visit,” Mia was pleased to report.
Their visit to the Water Wheel Tavern nearly didn’t happen, as they were unsure about parking the motor home. But they found a park right outside.
“The bar staff invited us to try some of the local craft beers, which we happily obliged,” Mia said.
“Our meals were superb, we rated the squid highly.
“Chatting with the locals is the best way to discover legendary spots like Lake Tyers.”
