Seeking platform funding

12 December 2018
in Local News

Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester, is working to secure the money needed to build an iconic viewing platform at Jemmys Point.

Mr Chester has written to the responsible federal and state ministers requesting any surplus funds from the $50 million Princes Highway safety upgrade be used to construct the viewing platform as a road safety initiative.

“Getting travellers to take regular breaks during long drives is a proven road safety initiative and a world-class viewing platform would also attract visitors to Lakes Entrance,” Mr Chester said.

“The view of the Gippsland Lakes, 90 Mile Beach and the township demands a better viewing area and I’m urging the state and federal ministers to work together to support this project.”

Mr Chester secured the $50 million joint funding for the highway when he was Transport Minister and says the scope of works has already delivered much needed improvements.

“There are new overtaking lanes, rest stops and many kilometres of road shoulders which have been sealed,” Mr Chester said.

“Works are well underway to improve pedestrian safety along The Esplanade in Lakes Entrance and the carpark at Jemmy’ s Point has already been upgraded to accommodate large recreational vehicles, boats and caravans.

“Adding a world-class viewing platform to this precinct would encourage more visitors to take a break and, if they stop, we can encourage them to stay and explore our region.”

Mr Chester said he had written to both ministers to formally request they work with East Gippsland Shire Council to allocate any unspent funds to the project.
